४ दिसंबर २०१९ को “विकास पागल हो गया है” नामक फेसबुक यूजर ने एक १९ सेकंड का वीडियो क्लिप पोस्ट करते हुए लिखा है कि “प्याज़ पर वित्त मंत्री जी- “मैं इतना लहसन,प्याज़ नहीं खाती हूँ जी So Don’t worry मैं ऐसे परिवार से आती हूँ जहाँ onion प्याज़ मतलब नहीं रखते”
वित्त मंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण का एक वीडियो क्लिप सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल हो गया है, जहां उन्हें यह कहते हुए देखा जा सकते है कि वह ज्यादा प्याज नहीं खाती हैं और ऐसे परिवार से आती हैं जहां प्याज और लहसुन कोई मायने नहीं रखते है | सीतारमण ने बुधवार को लोकसभा में एक अन्य सांसद के प्रश्न के उत्तर के दौरान यह टिप्पणी की थी |
कई सोशल मीडिया यूजर्स ने उनके इस बयान को असंवेदनशील बताया है क्योंकि यह देश में बढ़ती प्याज की कीमतों और किसानों व उपभोक्ताओं के लिए संकट का कारण बन गया है |

वायरल टिप्पणी उस समय आई जब वित्त मंत्री सीतारमण देश में प्याज उत्पादन में गिरावट पर सुप्रिया सुले द्वारा उठाए गए एक सवाल का जवाब देने जा रही थीं | इससे पहले कि वह जवाब दे पाते, एक सांसद को हम वित्त मंत्री से सवाल पूछते हुए सुन सकते है कि क्या उसने मिस्र से प्याज खाया है? यह सवाल भारतीय आपूर्ति और नियंत्रण कीमतों में सुधार के लिए मिस्र से प्याज के आयात को मंजूरी देने वाली केंद्र सरकार के संदर्भ में पूछा गया था |
टिप्पणी करने के बाद, वे सुप्रिया सुले को अपनी प्रतिक्रिया जारी रखी, जिसमें सरकार द्वारा निर्यात पर प्रतिबंध, स्टॉक सीमा लगाने, आयात और प्याज को अधिशेष से घाटे वाले क्षेत्र में स्थानांतरित करने और कम उत्पादन के लिए जिम्मेदार ठहराया गया |
इसका खंडन करते हुए, वित्त मंत्री ने यह टिप्पणी की कि वह ज्यादा प्याज नहीं खातीं हैं और ऐसे परिवार से आती हैं जहां प्याज कोई मायने नहीं रखता है | हालांकि, वित्त मंत्री का यह बयान सुनने में असंवेदनशील लगता है परंतु जवाब में कहीं भी उन्हें यह कहते हुए नहीं पाया जा सकता है कि “वह व्यक्तिगत रूप से प्याज़ की बढ़ती कीमतों के बारे में चिंतित नहीं है क्योंकि वह एक उपभोक्ता नहीं है”,

Hence, the production has gone down. I take great pride in being an Indian, and proud to be an Indian which feeds every Indian’s mouth, so why has the production gone down. I am not happy eating Egyptian onions, why should India do it, and we export rice, we export milk, so many products, we are the second largest rice producer in the world, and wheat, why are we doing this, Isn’t it a regressive step? if you could kindly clarify, about the Mudra loan which is NPA and the onions, because the onion grower is the small farmer, the onion farmer is not the 20 and 30 acre one, he’s the small farmer with less water, so he really needs to be protected is my request.

Nirmala Sitharaman: No, Honourable member Supriya Ji, I must say from 2014 I have also been part of some of the group of ministers which monitors the ups and downs in onion market. Sometimes when there is a surplus of the crop, we have also facilitated by giving support to those people who want to export it. I have overnight passed orders for helping with 5 to 7 percent of assistance for exporting it. There are severe structural problems related it onion.
